8th Grade Girls go to College

On Wednesday, January 29 ten Oswalt 8th grade girls hopped on a bus and headed over to Whittier College for the American Association of Univerisity Women's (AAUW) Math and Science Conference. AAUW is a nonprofit organization that empowers women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. Two hundred girls were selected from various schools throughout the San Gabriel Valley to attend this year's conference. Each of the 8th grade girls were sent to a variety of college classrooms to listen to six women speakers who are in a variety of math and science careers. Among the speakers was a planetary geologist, dietician, epidemiologist, obstetrics and gynecology doctor (OB/GYN), psychologist, veterinarian, FBI agent, and an occupational therapist. In addition to hearing about a variety of careers in math and science, several of the speakers shared their high school and college path of classes, scholarships, and internships available.
