Oswalt Girls Make Headlines in RUSD News

The conference is organized by the American Association of University Women (AAUW), a nonprofit organization whose mission advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. Each student was selected based on her potential and interest in math and science for future careers. During the sessions, students were exposed to six speakers in various careers ranging from Special Agent/FBI, Planetary Geologist and Systems Engineer, to Physician and Epidemiologist. “The AAUW Math and Science Conference was a wonderful opportunity to expose our girls to the various fields that math and science have to offer,” said Lisa Anne Buckmeier, Ed.D., 8th Grade Math & Science teacher at Oswalt who attended with Telesis/Oswalt Counselor Beverly Heap. “Some speakers not only shared about their career, but the high school and college path they took to reach their current positions. As a Whittier College alumni, I appreciate that the college opened its doors for our girls to be in college classrooms and hear the messages from women who are making great strides in their respective fields. Susan Halliday, former RUSD principal, was also in attendance because she is the current President for the AAUW Whittier Branch.”
