Oswalt Academy named APPLE DISTINGUISHED SCHOOL second year in a row!

ROWLAND HEIGHTS, CA – JANUARY 24, 2011 – For the second year in a row, Stanley G. Oswalt Academy has been named an Apple Distinguished School for its successful Apple One to One Laptop Learning Program. Oswalt Academy is one of only 10 schools in California recognized for this prestigious technology award. The K-8 school has more than 500 laptops on campus and all students and teachers in 5th - 8th grade have 24/7 access to pre-loaded grade level textbooks and digital authoring applications. Students in grades K-4 are using the iPod touch to increase reading fluency, reading comprehension and the attainment of standards-based skills. In a short amount of time, the school has seen dramatic academic growth. The Rowland Unified Board of Education will recognize this achievement and be presented the award on Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at 7 p.m.
“I am so pleased to know that Oswalt continues to be recognized for its outstanding One to One Laptop Learning Program that demonstrates Apple's highest vision of a successful 21st century learning environment,” said Astrid Ramirez, former Oswalt Principal who implemented the program and who is now a School Account Executive with Apple. “The students, staff and community have embraced the technology and have seen the transformation of learning our students have experienced as digital learning is now part of their academic program.”
The Rowland Unified School District (RUSD) is proud to be the only District in California to have the Apple Laptop Learning program in K- 12 public schools. The innovative program is now at four of its schools: Oswalt Academy, Ybarra Academy of the Arts and Technology, and launched this year at Giano Intermediate and Nogales High School.
Since its implementation in 2008, Oswalt Academy’s English Language scores have increased to 77.5% of students scoring proficient or advanced on CST school wide and math score have risen to 83.5% of students scoring proficient or advanced on the CST, an increase of 8.3% and 4% respectively of what was already one of the highest performing schools in the area. Teachers and students are constantly connected in a collaborative and creative environment using blogs, podcasts and multi-media based projects for learning.

Each MacBook laptop includes the applications iPhoto, iMovie, iWeb, GarageBand, iDVD, and ComicLife and has wireless connectivity and a built-in video camera and accessibility features like text-to-voice. Teachers also have ProScopes (a hand-held microscope) for science use. The Oswalt campus has WiFi throughout the school.
The Apple Laptop Learning Program is funded by parent purchases/multi-year leasing to own programs over three years, school fundraising, and community business support.
